Since Wesleyan’s FYSs have become increasingly popular, we decided to ask: what do faculty do when they teach them?
To find out, we designed the Teaching Writing Practices Content Inventory (TWPCI), modeled on Carl Wieman’s Teaching Practices Inventory, which documents what pedagogies faculty use when teaching STEM courses, with a particular focus on those pedagogies that are supported by research.
We piloted the TWPCI in October 2018 and adjusted it based on the preliminary responses from the FYS faculty, mostly by making it a bit simpler. We then administered the inventory again in January 2021, and 16 faculty responded.
