WHAT WE DID
In Spring 2021, we spoke to six alumni who had passed through courses and other programming offered by Wesleyan’s Center for Jewish Studies. Our questions focused on: (1) how students first became involved with the CJS; (2) how they experienced CJS programming; and (3) what impact the CJS had on them.
WHAT WE LEARNED
Taking Hebrew at Wesleyan, according to these alums, is quite different than what many students may have experienced before college. Hebrew at Wesleyan encourages students to learn Hebrew by engaging in popular Israeli culture.
We also learned that the experience of taking Hebrew, and subsequently other courses to earn the minor in Jewish and Israeli Studies, has allowed a number of alums to rediscover and, as one alum put it, “fall back into love” with their faith.
